A new aquarium looks completely ready the day the water goes clear, gravel settled, filter humming, and that is exactly the moment most new tank deaths happen. The water looks fine because ammonia and nitrite are invisible. What is missing is not something you can see, it is a colony of bacteria that has not had time to grow yet, and until it does, a stocked tank is quietly poisoning itself. Cycling is the process of growing that colony before it matters, and it is the single most important thing to understand before fish go anywhere near a new setup.
What cycling actually is
Fish waste, uneaten food, and anything else that decays in a tank breaks down into ammonia, which is toxic to fish even in small amounts. In an established tank, two groups of bacteria living mostly in the filter media handle it in sequence: one converts ammonia into nitrite, which is also toxic, and a second converts that nitrite into nitrate, which is far less harmful and gets removed with regular water changes. That two-step conversion is the nitrogen cycle, and a brand new tank has none of it running yet.
Building that bacteria colony from nothing is what people mean by cycling a tank, and it is also why a tank that has been running for months can safely hold far more fish than the day it was filled.
